Kansas City is now the soccer center of the United States with the recent opening of Pinnacle, the state of the art training and development center located in Kansas City, Kansas. This premiere facility is a first ever collaboration between a professional sports team (Sporting KC) , a national sports federation (US Soccer) and a sports medicine provider (Children’s Mercy).
The new facility offers three full-sized synthetic turf soccer fields and an area called the Coaching Pavilion complete with led lights, an observation deck with cameras and classrooms outfitted for training athletes. In addition to the fields and Coaching Pavilion, there is a sports performance lab, equipped with the newest innovations in sports medicine, a coaching development center, full service gymnasium, and an event space to host personal and community functions.
Player and coaching development were the key initiatives for Pinnacle’s creation which has been six years in the making. The new $75 million dollar complex anticipates tens of thousands of visitors annually as it positions itself as a premiere destination offering an all inclusive approach to the sport of soccer. Coaches, players and referees of all ages are able to utilize the facility and multiple program offerings. U.S.
Soccer has moved its coaching and referee training programs to the 50-acre site, and an open invitation has been to sent to all the U.S men and women’s soccer teams to use the training facility, with reserved space specifically for professional athletes within the locker rooms and training areas. Sporting KC will be using the facility as their main training location and have already begun utilizing Pinnacle for its athletes.
Along with the benefit that Pinnacle will provide to the sport of soccer on a national level, the construction of Pinnacle has been locally beneficial to many Kansas City based contractors and their employees. Pinnacle has been dubbed “the crown jewel of American soccer” and the CEO of US Soccer, Dan Flynn foresees the facility being fully utilized this summer by the nation’s professional athletes, thus further stimulating the local economy for many businesses and giving a boost to the tourism industry.
Populous Architects spearheaded the design of Pinnacle. With help of other local contractors, such as Turner Construction, Henderson Engineers, Young + Diring Landscape Architects, WSKF Architects, and RockTops, the completion of Pinnacle has come to full fruition this past March.
