Stone Cleaning

GRANITE:

  • Natural stones come from the earth, so they are porous.
  • Is scratch and stain resistant, but the stain resistance comes from regularly sealing of the stone.
  • We’ll apply two coats of sealer at the time of installation, but it’s up to the homeowner to continue this maintenance.
  • Natural stone cleaners or dish soap and water are great cleaners.
  • Recommend staying away from harsh chemicals. This won’t hurt the stone itself but it will strip away and break down the sealer quicker.

QUARTZ:

  • An engineered stone that is non-porous and does not need to be sealed.
  • Scratch and stain-resistant.
  • Avoid heat/high temperatures as it can discolor.
  • Use a mild detergent or dish soap and water.
  • Able to use harsher chemicals than with a natural stone, but it is recommended to stick with a stone cleaner.
  • The best household cleaners to use when you have a stubborn stain on your top are Soft Scrub bleach, Clorox wipes, and Bar Keeper’s Friend soft scrub. However, don’t put too much elbow grease into it because you could potentially etch the surface.

QUARTZITE:

  • Quartzite is different than quartz.
  • A natural stone – and is one of the hardest, most dense natural stones.
  • The beauty of marble without the maintenance of marble.
  • Maintenance is minimal and requires care similar to that of granite.
  • Recommended using a non-acidic, low pH cleanser such as mild soap and water or stone-specific cleaners.
  • We’ll apply two coats of sealer at the time of installation, but it’s up to the homeowner to continue this maintenance.

MARBLE:

  • Marble is one of the softer stones.
  • Known as a “living stone” as it will change or patina over time.
  • Scratching and etching can still occur; however, with a good sealer, it will not stain.
  • Etching comes from acidic substances such as vinegar or citrus.
  • Recommend sealing this type of stone more often than the other natural stones.
  • We recommend soap and water or a mild detergent to clean.

PORCELAIN:

  • An engineered stone that is non-porous and does not need to be sealed.
  • Very low water absorption rate
  • Scratch and stain-resistant
  • Use a mild detergent or dish soap and water.
  • Avoid acidic cleaners or ammonia.
  • Must be low pH types of cleaners
  • Very tolerant to heat and sunlight

TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • Use of coasters for glasses and mugs
  • Immediate cleaning of potentially staining substances (citrus, vinegars, wine, etc.)
  • Use of hot pads and trivets
  • Always use a cutting board
